A three-sport star, Gasdek flashed his ability in football, wrestling and track & field during his four years at IUP.
A four-year participant on the football field, Gasdek was a key cog that helped turn IUP around during his time, as the squad went 7-1 with a 5-1 mark in the division in 1963. That year he was awarded for his hard work, as he was just one of five players who earned offensive all-conference honors.
Proving he could succeed at more sports, in 1964 Gasdek was named IUP’s athlete of the year.
Upon his graduation from IUP in 1964, Gasdek went on to a 28-year career in the U.S. Army, where he was honored with the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the Army.
He also earned a master’s degree from Georgia State in 1971 and graduated from Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1976.
