After graduating from Indiana High School in 1965, Barry Warren went on to have a standout career in football and track and field at his hometown university from 1970-73.
Warren's mark on the IUP track and field program extends all the way to the present day. He currently holds the school's oldest record with his time of I minute 52.0 seconds in the 800 meters that he set in 1971.
In 1973, Warren was the PSAC and NAIA District 18 champion in the 880 dash.
A 1973 IUP sports release stated that, "Warren looked the most outstanding of the middle distance men" on the Indians' squad. He clocked an impressive time of I minute 13 seconds in the 600 that year.
He lettered twice each in football and track and field.
As a backup up safety on the 1972 football team. Warren made 28 tackles, 17 of which were solo, in addition to picking off two passes. One of his interceptions choked off an Edinboro scoring drive while the other set up a score against California. IUP won both of those games and finished with a record of 8- 1.
Hall of Famer Dave Balmer, who picked off a record 19 passes as a safety, graduated after the 1972 season, and Warren took over as the starter at that position the next year.
Warren, who did not play high school football, helped IUP to a 7-2 record in 1973. He made 37 tackles and was in on four pass breakups.
After high school, Warren fulfilled a military commitment by serving as an Army paratrooper in the Vietnam War. As a senior at IUP, he was the oldest player on the football roster at 26 years of age.
After graduating from IUP. Warren embarked on a teaching and coaching career. He was a health and physical education teacher in the Churchill Area school district from 1978-81 and in the Woodland Hills school district since 1981.
Warren was an assistant football coach at Churchill High School from 1978-86 while also serving as assistant boys track coach (1979) and head coach from 1980-87. At Woodland Hills, he headed the boys track team from 1988-90 and returned to coaching as a boys and girls assistant track coach from 1995-98.
He made running into a life-long sport and won the Masters 100 meters and 200 meters in the 50-to-54 age group at the Keystone State Games in 1998.
Warren and his wife Bonnie are the parents of William, Robin and Jodi, and the couple has three grandchildren.
