Although many of his statistics and records are lost to history, anyone who saw Billy Hoffman on the football or baseball field remember him as one of the best athletes ever at IUP.

Hoffman was the quarterback on the football team and played third base on the diamond from 1956 until 1960.

During his time on the football team, Hoffman played with future IUP Athletic Hall of Fame members Bob Cleminson, Frank Cignetti, Norm Lewandowski and Bob McFarland. Like most players of his era, he played both offense and defense and also returned punts and kickoffs.

Hoffman was an all-conference performer in football and was an integral part of the baseball team which won 14 of 19 games, captured the NAIA District 30 and Area 8 titles and advanced to the NAIA College World Series in Sioux City, Iowa.

Hoffman was in the U.S. Army, seeing three years of active service and another 22 in the National Guard. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and received the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Military Commendation Medal and Master Aviator Wings.

After leaving the Army, Hoffman embarked on a career with Coca-Cola, including tenures as the president and CEO of Atlanta Coca-Cola from 1980-89 and Coca-Cola France from 1989-92 and senior vice president in 1992.

Hoffman and his wife, Mickey, are the parents of William Jr. and Scott.
