Beginning with a PSAC West Rookie of the Year award in 1990 and concluding as the top scorer in IUP basketball history, Cathy Torchia-Suman enjoyed one of the finest athletic careers of any athlete ever at the university.
Torchia scored 1,722 points in four years, more than any player- man or woman – in school history. At the time of her graduation, no women's player was closer than 351 in the career scoring department.
During her senior season in 1992-93, Torchia averaged 20.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game to lead IUP in both categories and earn a spot on the All-America team. She would be the last IUP woman to be recognized as an All-American until Jahzinga Tracey was honored in 2008.
Torchia led IUP in scoring in each of her final three seasons. In addition to ranking atop the school record book in scoring, Torchia stands first in field goals made (667), second in scoring average (16.7) and free throws made (164), third in assists (367), fifth in steals (241) and eighth in rebounds (626).
After graduating from St. Francis Academy in 1989 and IUP in 1993, Torchia went into the education field and currently teaches third grade at McCullough Elementary School in Penn Trafford, Pa.
Torchia and her husband, Robert Suman, are the parents of Cameron (8), Madison (6) and Maura (4).
