There was no overlooking Cindy Davies during the 1984-85 season, either on the court or in the vote.
Davies was a runaway selection as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division MVP, a predictable result in that it seemed inconceivable any other player could have been as indispensable to her team.
Consider that the 6-foot-2 center finished her senior year as IUP's leader in scoring (18.2 points per game), rebounding (8.8), field goal percentage (.546), free throw percentage (.788), steals (60) and blocked shots (65).  What's more, Davies poured in 38 points during an 81-67 victory over Clarion, which still stands as the school record. She complemented her offensive assault with 12 rebounds, seven assists and five blocked shots.
In addition to her MVP honor, Davies earned first-team berths on the PSAC West, ECAC South Division II and Kodak District II all-star squads.
She first suited up for IUP as a junior after transferring from Penn State and made an immediate impact. Davies led the Indians in scoring (16.7) and rebounding (8.7), paced the PSAC in both field goal percentage (.564) and free throw percentage (.818) and was selected as a first-team PSAC West all-star. The Indians finished 19-8, the winningest season in school history to that point, and captured the program's first PSAC West title.
Davies finished her IUP career with 906 points in only 52 games. She still holds career records for field goal percentage (.555) and free throw percentage (.802) and ranks second all-time in scoring average (17.4). Including her two seasons at Penn State, Davies scored 1,372 points as a collegian.
Of course, scoring points is what brought Davies national acclaim at Indiana High School.  She set a Pennsylvania record with 2,322 points, earned all-state honors and was selected to the Parade magazine All-America team.  Davies was also recognized in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd section.
She was invited to participate in the United States Olympic trials in Colorado Springs in both 1980 and 1984, played on a team that represented the U.S. in the Jones Cup tournament in Taiwan in 1980 and captained the East squad that won a silver medal at the 1981 National Sports Festival.
This marks the second time Davies has returned home for a Hall of Fame induction.  Three years ago she was enshrined in the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame.
Davies, who graduated from IUP in 1985 and earned a master’s degree from Keystone College in La Plume, Pennsylvania, three years ago, works as a physical therapist at Medway Health in DeSoto, Texas.
She is the daughter of Robert and Martha Davies.  Before retiring, Dr. Davies served many years as a physician to a number of IUP sports teams.
