The 1968 IUP football team which won all nine of its regular season games and was invited to the prestigious Boardwalk Bowl in Atlantic City, N.J., is revered as one of the greatest teams in the university's history.  Several members from that team are already in the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame and today they are joined by halfback Dan Cox.

Cox was a junior during that historic season and led the Indians in rushing with 696 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning a spot on the Associated Press honorable mention All-America team and gaining selection as the Westmoreland County Small College Player of the Year.

Cox, a four-year letterman, came to IUP out of Latrobe High School in 1966 and played in a reserve role as a freshman that fall, rushing for 158 yards and scoring two touchdowns. The following year he began a two-year run as the Indians' leading rusher, gaining 706 yards and scoring nine times. For good measure, Cox even kicked an extra point that season.

In his final season in 1969, Cox was second with 376 yards on the ground, giving him a total of 1,936 over his four-year career. That figure ranked him atop the IUP record book at the time of his graduation, and he now stands in 11th place. Cox is also fourth in career rushing attempts with 522, tied for fourth with 32 rushing touchdowns and seventh with 33 total touchdowns scored.

His 37 carries in a 1968 game versus C.W. Post is still tied for the fifth most ever in a game by an IUP running back.

Following his graduation in 1970, Cox spent two seasons on the Indian coaching staff as a graduate assistant while working towards his master's degree, which he received in 1972. He is currently a corporate account manager for Hexion Specialty Chemicals.

Cox and his wife, Cheryl, are the parents of Shannon, Brennan and Taylor.
