Accomplishments registered in four IUP basketball seasons nearly 40 years ago were what selectors of this Hall of Fame inaugural class were most familiar with when they invited Jamie Kimbroug h to accept the inductee honor.

But Dr. James Kimbrough is in fact a man for all seasons, as the 1959 Indiana State Teachers College graduate has achieved as much or more in fields ranging from music ( he's known as a good pianist who has played in jazz bands) to three distinct careers in education, health-care management and city government.

In basketball terms, Kimbrough as a senior was named to the NAIA All-American second team, the first IUP player in history to land such an honor (other Indian All-Americans had been honorable mention choices).

Kimbrough is today the 10th leading scorer in IUP history, having scored 1316 points in his career. Only two players prior to him had posted more than 1000 points. The four teams coached by Peck McKnight on which he played won a combined 91 games and lost 21.

His junior-year team (in I957-58) concluded a 25-3 record by advancing to the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City for the first time and reaching the quarterfina l round. As a senior, he paced a 15-5 team as its leading scorer (21.I points per game) a nd top rebounder ( 12.8 per game).

Believed to be the first music major to double as a roundball player ever at IUP (there have been few if any since), Kimbrough completed a master of arts degree in special education at Western Michigan University and a Ph.D. in education at the University of Pittsburgh.

Chairman of the orientation and mobility department for the Greater Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind for 12 years ( 1967-79), he moved across town to Allegheny General Hospital as manager of employee devel op ment and stayed  there until 1987. He completed a four-year term (from 1983) with the IUP Council of Trustees.

In 1990, he moved across the country, to become an organization effectiveness specialist for the City of San Diego. A great part of his work deals with the city's Diversity Commitment program, one that has won national awards.

Kimbrough is the father of one daughter, Janet, a Penn State graduate who is a human resources specialist with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit in Pittsburgh.
