The name Ed Fry is synonymous with track and field and cross country at IUP, having coached the men's teams in both sports from 1966 until his retirement in 2009 and helping start the women's programs in 1978.
During his time at the university, Fry coached numerous PSAC champions and All-Americans and led IUP to seven state titles in women's cross country, four in men's cross country and one in women's track and field. His 1977 men's and 1985 women's cross country teams both finished third at the NCAA national meet. For his team's accomplishments, Fry was named the PSAC Coach of the Year a total of four times in his career.
Four men and 10 women earned top 15 finishes at the NCAA cross country meet during his career. In 2003 Mindy Sawtelle was second at nationals, at the time the highest finish ever for a woman from the East Region, and Eliza Benzoni took third at the 1989 meet. Nick Yutko was Fry's top men's finisher at nationals, placing sixth in 1983.
In track and field, I 0 athletes won national championships and several of those athletes have already been enshrined in the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame.
Fry is also a world-class runner, having finished 17th overall and sixth among American competitors at the age of 39 at the 1978 New York Marathon. He also won the Sub-Masters I 0,000 meters in 1975 and is an age group American record holder at 10 miles.
Fry was elected to the Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame in 2010 and inducted into the DePaul University Hall of Fame in 1996. He is a 1962 graduate of DePaul.
In addition to his coaching and running exploits, Fry taught piano and music theory as an instructor in the IUP School of Music for more than four decades. He and his wife, Betsy, are the parents of sons Christopher and Douglas.
