A four-year letterman at Indiana State Teacher’s College, Matko was the number one starter on the 1949 State Champion golf team. He was also the 1949 State Champion and the school’s number one starter for three years.
Before excelling at Indiana, Matko played at Latrobe High School, where he was the number two golfer behind PGA legend Arnold Palmer.
Matko was also active in the classroom, where he was the editor-in-chief of Indiana’s nationally acclaimed student newspaper, the Penn. Matko went on to have a long career teaching high school English and Communications. He retired from Norwin High School in 1985.
Edward lives with his wife Nancy Misner Matko.
