Franklin “Tanky" Hines George is being inducted posthumously for his stellar play under football coach George P. Miller from 1932-35.
As a center, George anchored the Indians' offensive line and was a member of the 1934 team that went 6-0. The 1934 Indiana State Teacher's College squad outscored its opponents by an average margin of 21-3.
At 145 pounds, George was the smallest man on the varsity roster in 1934, but an October 27 game program states that George. "makes up for it in fight."
The Indians had a record of 20-8 during George's career. ISTC beat Edinboro four times by a combined score of 115-0 during that span. The Indians added four wins over Clarion by a combined count of 94-9, including two shutouts.
ISTC lost three of its first four games in George's senior season of 1935 before turning the season around and staking a 5-3 record to take first place in the PSAC.
That campaign was capped off with a 17-6 victory over previously undefeated Shippensburg that clinched the conference title.
IUP's smallish center, George, helped spring Marshall Woodring for the winning touchdown on what The Gazette called, “a most unexpected score."
George, who graduated from Indiana High School in 1931 and from ISTC in 1936, earned his master's degree from Columbia University in 1938.
He was a history teacher and assistant football coach at Ferndale High School from 1936-40. His 1938 squad won the Western Pennsylvania football championship.
During World War II, George was with the U.S. Air Force troop carrier squadron in the India-Burma theatre. He also served in the American Red Cross and was with the United Nations Rehabilitation Agency in 1945.
Following the conclusion of his military service, George helped to establish the Koontz and George Insurance Agency in Indiana, retiring in 1981. He was an active member of several community organizations, including the American Heart Association, Elks Club and Lions Club. George also served as the president of the ISTC Alumni Association.
George and his wife Betty are the parent of two daughters, Katherine and Margaret. The couple also has three grandchildren.
