Grover Eugene Epley attended Indiana State College and played football from 1961-64 before graduating with a degree in US history in 1965. On the field, he was referred to as the “meanest man on campus,” and helped IUP win its first PSAC championship in 1964. With his play, he was honored with All-PSAC first team honors after the season.
After leaving graduation, Epley held several coaching positions from 1967-2004. He got his start as an offensive line coach for Utah State, and a defensive line coach at the University of Utah in 1967 and 1967 and 1969 respectively. Epley would spend 1972-76 as the head coach at Shippensburg.
After making coaching stops at Virginia-Charlottesville, West Point, and William and Mary, Epley would take over as the Marietta head coach in 1991. He would win Coach of the Year in 1995 from the Ohio Athletic Conference and become the winningest coach in Marietta history. After leaving Marietta, Epley led Parkersburg High School to two West Virginia State Championships in three seasons.
Epley passed away in November of 2010. He was survived by his wife Shelly, as well as their twin daughters Kelly and Shelly (King).
