The cover of the 1991-92 IUP women's basketball media guide reads. " Big Shoes to Fill .''
That refers to the loss of four-year starting forwards Jan Lightcap and Sherri Leysock. Indeed the void left by Lightcap was a big one. She was instrumental in laying the foundation for the IUP women's basketball program.
Although Lightcap never led the Indians in scoring or rebounding, her statistical achievements made her an eventual Hall of Famer.
Lightcap is I UP's second all-time leading scorer with 1.371 points and stands fourth in rebounds with 831. A 5-foot- 11 forward from Marion Center High School, Lightcap played in 108 games, a figure that ranks seventh in IUP annals. Only two players have made more than her 551 field goals. and she hit 50 percent of her shots.
Lightcap helped JUP to the PSAC title as a freshman while earning all-conference honorable mention honors. As a junior. She led IUP to an 18-9 record to give the Indians the second most wins in school history at the time. That year she averaged 14.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while being named to the all-conference second team.
Lightcap scored 14.9 points to go with 8.1 rebounds per game as a senior. She averaged double figures in points all four years and her low
rebounding average of 6.9 came as a freshman.
In addition to her undergraduate degree from I UP, Lightcap also received a master's in education from the university in 1992. Lightcap. who earned Academic All-America honors at IUP, is a business education teacher at Indiana Area Junior High School and is the school's ninth grade girls' basketball coach.
Lightcap and her husband Mike are the parents of Kearsten and Sloan.
