Kevin McMullan reached Hall of Fame status both on the diamond and on the gridiron.
McMullan was a two-time all-conference performer in both baseball and football and was selected team captain while earning All-America accolades in both sports. Overall, he played on six PSAC championship teams at IUP.
McMullan, a native of DuMont, N.J., was named a second team All-America linebacker by the Associated Press in the 1988 as well as being chosen to the AII-PSAC West first team for the second season in a row.
On the baseball field, he was selected AII-PSAC West as a designated hitter in 1988 and as a designated hitter and catcher in 1990, making the All-America team the latter season.
A four-year letterman in football, McMullan was as solid as they come at inside linebacker. In his All-America season, he made 110 tackles, eight of which went for losses, and had three sacks. He anchored a defense that gave up fewer than two touchdowns per game.
As a junior in 1987, McMullan earned the first of his two straight AII-PSAC West first team honors by making 156 tackles, the third highest single-season total in school history. McMullan led a defense that gave up 10.5 points per game with four interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
In IUP's first-ever playoff game against Central Florida, McMullan helped shut down a powerful Golden Knight offense, making 13 tackles and intercepting two passes in a 12-10 loss.
He finished his career with 417 tackles to rank third in the IUP record book in that category.
As a senior in the spring of 1990, McMullan captained an IUP baseball team that set a school record for wins with 35 on its way to NCAA Division II playoffs. That year IUP was ranked as high as No. 4 in the country thanks in large part to McMullan, who clubbed a school-record 12 home runs.
McMullan was named the MVP of the PSAC tournament as IUP won its second conference title in three years. In addition to his home run total, his gaudy statistics that year included a .398 batting average, a .789 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. Behind the plate, McMullan made just two errors while handling a pitching staff that had an ERA of 3.51.
In the IUP career record book, McMullan is first in home runs (24) and slugging percentage (.640), second in RBls (107), fourth in total bases (249), seventh in batting average (.352) and ninth in hits (137), runs (83) and doubles (26).
McMullan graduated from IUP in 1990 and was head baseball coach at his alma mater from 1994-96. He was then an assistant coach at St. John's, managed in the Atlanta Braves organization and served as acting head coach at East Carolina in 2002, leading the Pirates to a record of 43-20, a Conference USA title and an NCAA tournament berth.
He is currently in his fifth season on the coaching staff at the University of Virginia, including his second as associate head coach. With McMullan on the staff, the Cavaliers are 177-66 and have made four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.
McMullan and his wife, Sandra, are the parents of daughters Maggie (6) and Emma (3) and son Jack (2).
