In terms of where he stands in the IUP baseball record book, Mike Sobota is the most decorate Pitcher in school history. The lefthander lettered four times from 1985-88 after graduating from Homer-Center High School.

He capped off his stellar IUP career with a 1988 senior season that saw him earn several awards. That year he set single season with 10 wins and 84 innings pitched while being named all-region, and all second team All-American in addition to being tabbed the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year Sobota is believed to be IUP's first baseball All-American.

Sobota, who was also a PSAC West all-star in 1987. Holds the school record for career wins with 21.

He is second in IUP annals with 211 innings pitched and 203 strikeouts. Sobota started 33 games, which is good for second all time, and his 36 appearances rank sixth. He had 17 complete games, which is tied for fourth in school history with fellow inductee Bill Thompson and Jeff Lloyd, both former teammates.

Sobota was a team captain for head coach Jerry Hand in 1988 and went 10-2 while registering nearly one-third of IUP's 32 victories. He started 12 games and completed eight, including four shutouts, compiling an earned run average of 2.14 while striking out 76 batters in 84 innings.

IUP beat Slippery Rock 9-2, in a special playoff game to win the PSAC West title in 1988 after each teamed finished 16-4. Sobota got the win that day, and said in the May 7 edition of The Indiana Gazette that it was one of the "biggest wins" in his career.

The Indians advanced to the NCAA North Central Regional Tournament where Sobota was a hard-luck loser. Giving up just one earned run as IUP lost to Mankato State by a score of 5-0. He lost to California, 1-0, in the regular season as the Indians did not score in either of his two defeats.

Sobota has been married for three years to wife Christy. He is employed by Coventry Health Care where he is a manager working in data management and database administration.
