Men's soccer may no longer be a varsity sport at IUP, but the accomplishments of Mike Webb still ring loudly in the annals of the university's storied athletic history.
Webb played at IUP from 1973-77 and earned a spot on the AII-PSAC team each season. He led the team in scoring three times and ranked atop the school record book in goals with 32, and assists with 36 at the time of his graduation. He was named the Indians' most valuable player as a junior in 1976 and was a two-time team captain.
In addition to his conference accolades, Webb was named to the all -region team three times. In October 1977 he was chosen the Pepsi National College Player of the Week.
Soccer has continued to play a huge part in Webb's life after he graduated from IUP with a degree in health, physical education and recreation in 1978 and returned to Virginia. He posted a record of 40-17- 5 with three district titles in five seasons at Courtland High School before taking over at Chancellor High School.
Webb has coached at Chancellor since 1989 with a record of 305-59-19, and his teams have won two state championships while finishing second in the state tournament two other times. He is third in Virginia hi story with 345 wins, and his 2003 team was ranked 12th in the nation. In 1993 and 2003 he was a finalist for the National Soccer Coaches Association National Coach of the Year Award and is a three-time state coach of the year.
Webb has taught health and physical education in the Spotsylvania County School System since 1979. He is on the board of directors of the Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Spotsylvania County Parks and Recreation Department in 2003.
Webb resides in Fredericksburg, Va., and is the father of daughters Sarah and Rachael.
