A very familiar face at most IUP sporting events is that of Nancy Newkerk, a retired IUP employee and a devout supporter of Indians athletics.
Newkerk, an Indiana resident, was the dean of women at IUP from 1957-67 and the associate dean of admissions from 1978-94. From her post in the admissions office, she worked as a liaison with the athletic department, and she has been involved in the freshmen football mentoring program since she retired.
She certified the eligibility of all freshmen athletes under Proposition 48 until a central clearing office was established. Newkerk also interviewed prospective IUP student-athletes on their campus visits prior to enrolling at the university.
Newkerk graduated from Liberty High School in New York before earning degrees at Oberlin College and Syracuse University. She served as the associate director of admissions at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., from 1967-78.
