Paul Murphy has built a life and career out of defending people, ideals, and his own teams.

As a defensive back on one of the strongest IUP football teams ever – racking up a record of eight wins and one loss in 1967 – Murphy picked off three interceptions in a single game against Edinboro.  As a guard on the IUP basketball teams of 1964-66, he worked to secure Big Indian victories, as well.

After his undergraduate career ended, he joined the U.S. Army and defended our nation during a tour in Vietnam.  He came home to serve as a mathematics teacher and football coach with the Greensburg Salem School District, working his way up over the years to become an assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent.

The Greensburg native attended Greensburg Salem High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from IUP in 1968.  He earned both a master’s degree in guidance and his secondary principal certification from Duquesne University in 1975 and 1979, respectively.  He and his wife, Linda, live in Greensburg.  They have three grown children, Nathan, Lindsay, and Lucas (deceased).
