Walt and Sue have been involved with IUP since 1966, first as students and then as supporters and beneficiaries of all IUP has to offer.

After growing up in Reading, Pa., Sue graduated from IUP in 1971 with a degree in elementary education and entered the teaching profession as a kindergarten teacher for the United School District while also working in the third grade for the Indiana Area School District.

Also earning a master’s degree in elementary education, Sue retired from teaching full-time in 2001 but has continued as a substitute teacher for ten years. She now spends as much time as possible with her ten grandchildren.

Walt grew up in Beaver Falls, Pa. and earned a degree in business with a concentration in accounting from IUP in 1970. He went on to become a Certified Public Accountant in 1972 and began a professional career that includes six years as the Director of the Accounting Office at IUP.

In 1978 he opened the Indiana office of McClure and Wolf, CPAs and then co-founded the CPA firm of Smith, Lewis, Chess and Company in 1988. After meeting and marrying in Indiana, Walt and Sue decided to make it their home. They raised three children, Lee, Jake and Sara who all graduated from Indiana High School and then went on to earn undergraduate degrees at Penn State. All three are now involved in the energy industry and are currently raising their families in Houston, Texas.

Had it not been for the second semester Freshman English at IUP, they would have never met. For this they will be forever grateful.
