IUP Wins Fourth Straight PSAC Title; Sean Sweithelm Takes Medalist Honors with Final Round 69

Crimson Hawks are the third team to win fourth straight conference championships

Final Results

Sean Sweithelm (Indiana/Indiana) fired a tournament-best round of 69 to rally for a one-shot victory and lead the IUP golf team to its fourth straight PSAC championship by a 20-shot margin over runner-up West Chester at the Hershey Links Golf Club.

The Crimson Hawks led by eight after Saturday's opening round but shot a 1-over par 289 Sunday to open up their final margin. Following IUP and West Chester were Clarion (613), Millersville (624), Mercyhurst (643), California (645) and Gannon (651).

The four consecutive conference titles marks the second time that IUP has accomplished that feat, joining the 1989-92 teams. Slippery Rock followed with four straight wins from 1993-96 for the only other fourpeat in PSAC history.

Sweithelm is the fourth straight IUP sophomore to win medalist honors. He overcame an opening round score of 76 to finish at 1-over par 145, edging West Chester's Griffith Basehore by one shot when he birdied the 18th hole Sunday.

The Indiana High School graduate joins Gavin Smith (2007), Leo Acklin (Falmouth, England/) (2008) and Brad Boyle (Kingston, ON/Frontenac Secondary) (2009) as the most recent four PSAC individual champions.

Zack Kempa (Brantford, ON/Assumption College School), who led after the first round, finished at 147 and was in third place. Boyle and Derek Baker (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) had scores of 151 and tied for 7th while Acklin tied for 16th at 159. Boyle shot a second-round 70 to join Sweithelm as two of only three golfers to go under par Sunday.

The Crimson Hawks resume in March for their spring season which includes the IUP-Cecil Spadafora Invitational and the NCAA Super Regional and national tournaments.
