Brad Boyle (Kingston, ON/Frontenac Secondary) shot a four-under 68 on day two, helping the Crimson Hawks rally from nine strokes back after the first round as IUP was victorious for the fifth straight time at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's Golf Championships this weekend at the Hershey Links. Boyle's 68 helped him to a two-day total of 146, as he won the individual title by three strokes.
IUP shot a 290 in the second round, 13 strokes better than Cal and 21 shots better than Clarion, which led the championships with a 305 after day one. The Crimson Hawks bettered the second place Golden Eagles by 12 strokes – 604-616 – as all five IUP golfers finished in the top 13 of the tournament.
Boyle began the tournament with a six-over 78, six strokes back of leader Ross Pringle from Clarion. His 68 was three strokes better than anyone else on day two, as he finished three shots ahead of Pringle for the championship.
Zack Kempa (Brantford, ON/Assumption College School) and
Derek Baker (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) tied for fifth for the tournament with a nine-over 153, as each shot a 75 on Sunday.
Sean Sweithelm (Indiana/Indiana) finished one shot back with a 10-over 154, tied for eighth overall, while
Jack Owen (Hampshire, U.K./Brockenhurst College) tied for 13th overall with a 14-over 158. Owen shot a one-over 73 on day two, the third best score of the day.
Crimson Hawks golfers combined for 22 birdies for the tournament, with Boyle getting six and Baker and Sweithelm each getting five.
The fall season concludes for IUP next weekend when the Crimson Hawks compete in the Vulcan Invitational in Belle Vernon, a tournament that was postponed from earlier this fall.
