Zack Kempa Second, IUP Tied for Sixth after First Round of NCAA Championships

SIMPSONVILLE, KY – Zack Kempa (Brantford, ON/Assumption College School) is three shots out of the lead with a four-under par 68 while IUP is tied for second as a team with a two-over 290 as the Crimson Hawks completed the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at the Cardinal Club Golf Course outside of Louisville, KY.

Kempa's 68 places him second overall behind leader Josh Creel from Central Oklahoma, who shot a seven-under 65. Daniel Stapff of Barry and Hayden Letien of South Carolina-Aiken are tied for third with a three-under 69 while nine golfers are tied for fifth with a two-under 70.

Behind Kempa are Brad Boyle (Kingston, ON/Frontenac Secondary) and Derek Baker (Waynesboro/Waynesboro), who are a part of an 11-way tie for 36th at one-over 73 after the first round. Jack Owen (Hampshire, U.K./Brockenhurst College) shot a four-over 76 while Sean Sweithelm (Indiana/Indiana) finished with a seven-over 79.

The Crimson Hawks top four scores totaled 290, tied with Barry for sixth overall. IUP is 11 strokes back of leader Central Oklahoma, which shot a nine-under 279 on day one. UNC Pembroke is second with a three-under 285 and Western Washington is third with a one-under 287, while Chico State and Georgia State are tied with a one-over 289.

St. Edward's and Nova Southeastern are tied at three-over while Grand Canyon and South Carolina-Aiken are both a four-over, rounding out the top 10 after the first round.

Round two is set to get underway on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., with IUP's first golfer scheduled to tee off at 12:50 p.m.
