LOCK HAVEN, PA – After setting a career-high in his final regular season home game as a Crimson Hawk, IUP's
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Athlete of the Week.
On Senior Night against Edinboro, Souberbielle went 10-of-15 from the floor, registering a career-high 27 points and adding six rebounds, one assist, one block and four steals in his 80th career start. He was 2-of-4 from three-point range and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe in his 37 minutes of play.
His performance in that game helped lead the team to a 78-65 victory over the Fighting Scots, a win that clinched the second seed and a first round by for the PSAC tournament.
In the team's prior meeting with Mercyhurst, he registered 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.
On the season, Souberbielle leads the team, averaging 16.1 points per game, a mark that's good for 11th in the conference. He's ninth in the PSAC in field goal percentage, connecting on 48.6 percent of his shots. Solid from the free throw line, he is IUP's top free throw shooter, shooting 78.3 percent from the charity stripe, ninth in the conference.
He leads the team with 22 games in double figures and nine 20+ point games. He's been the team's top scorer in 10 competitions this season.
The senior is one of only 28 players in IUP history to score at least 1,000 points in his career, an honor he earned earlier this season against Pitt-Johnstown.
Souberbielle and the Crimson Hawks will wrap up the regular season with a road battle with heated rival Slippery Rock on Wednesday night. They'll then have the weekend to rest before hosting their first PSAC tournament game on Tuesday, where they'll play the winner of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 matchup. Tipoff from Slippery Rock is scheduled for 8 p.m. while the PSAC tournament game time has yet to be determined.
