Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) had the clinching the win as IUP blanked Chowan 5-0 on the opening action of the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Atlantic Regional on Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks advance to Sunday where they'll face the winner of the West Virginia State/Slippery Rock match, which will be played at 6 p.m. tonight. Sunday's winner will move on to the NCAA championships round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
IUP got out to its 3-0 lead after doubles play with three easy victories. The first came at No. 3 with Mahto and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) defeating Jessica De Backre and Jennifer Humphrey 8-0.
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) and
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) followed that up with an 8-2 victory at No. 2 over Natalia Andrade and Breanna Johnson.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) made IUP perfect in doubles with an 8-5 win at No. 1 over Natalya Kamenshchikova and Holly Stambaugh.
In singles play, McFail was IUP's first win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Straffai Cleveland. Mahto's victory came at No. 4 over De Backre, winning 6-0, 6-1.
This is the fifth consecutive season that the Crimson Hawks have advanced to the NCAA championships and are going for their fourth straight trip to the NCAA's round of 16.
