LOCK HAVEN, PA – For the third consecutive year, IUP has been chosen to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division in the preseason football poll, conducted by the league's coaches and announced on Monday afternoon.

The poll was released at PSAC Media Day, which was hosted by Slippery Rock (Western Division) and Kutztown (Eastern Division) on Monday.

With 10 starters returning from a squad that finished 9-2 in 2013, IUP goes for its 18th PSAC championship and 16th NCAA Division II playoff berth.

The Crimson Hawks received five first place votes out of the possible eight, with Coal Bowl rival California (PA) getting the other three to come in second in the poll. Defending division champion Slippery Rock drops to third in the voting, with Mercyhurst coming in fourth and Gannon following in fifth. Edinboro, Clarion and Seton Hill round out the West in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

West Chester, a 2013 NCAA semifinalist, has been picked to win the East with seven first place votes. East Stroudsburg received one first place vote to come in second in the voting. Last year's PSAC champion Bloomsburg comes in third with Shippensburg and Kutztown following in fourth and fifth, respectively. Lock Haven is picked sixth, while Millersville is seventh and Cheyney is eighth.

IUP is 28-7 in its last three seasons under head coach Curt Cignetti, including a combined 21-4 mark in the last two seasons. In 2012, he guided the Crimson Hawks to their first PSAC title since 1987 and first NCAA postseason appearance since 2007. IUP's 15 appearances in the NCAA playoffs are the most of any school and their 17 conference titles are second most in the conference.

The Crimson Hawks open their 2014 season on Saturday, Sept. 6 against visiting Saint Augustine's at Frank Cignetti Field at George P. Miller Stadium.
