Crimson Hawks Sit 10th, Kempa Three Strokes Off Lead after Second Round of NCAA Championships

Round One Recap

SIMPSONVILLE, KY – Zack Kempa (Brantford, ON/Assumption College School) shot a two-under par 70 to remain three shots off the lead while IUP dropped to 10th overall through two rounds at the 2012 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at the Cardinal Club Golf Course outside of Louisville, Kentucky.

Kempa entered the day in second place at four-under after shooting a 68 on Tuesday. He heads into the third round with a six-under par 138 for the tournament.

After birdying the 10th hole to start the second round, Kempa bogeyed the 12th hole before adding birdies on holes 15 and 17 to get to two-under. He went ahead to par every hole on the front nine to stay at six-under.

The overall individual leader is Josh Creel from Central Oklahoma at nine-under, shooting a two-under 70 to remain in the lead by a slim margin. Chico State's Eric Frazzetta shot a nine-under 63 in the second round, climbing to second place with an eight-under 136. Jim Knous of Colorado School of Mines and Daniel Stapff of Barry are tied for third with a seven-under 137.

Brad Boyle (Kingston, ON/Frontenac Secondary) finished the second round with a one-under 71, moving into a tie for 21st overall at an even 144 for the tournament. He hit back-to-back birdies on holes 12 and 13 before following with three straight bogeys to finish his opening nine on Wednesday at one over. After another bogey on the third hole, Boyle eagled the par five fourth and followed with a birdie on the seventh to end the day one-under.

Derek Baker (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) shot a two-over 74 on Wednesday to move back to a tie for 41st with a three-over 147 for the tournament, while Jack Owen (Hampshire, U.K./Brockenhurst College) sits at a 10-over 154 and Sean Sweithelm (Indiana/Indiana) is a 13-over 157. The trio added four to IUP's birdie total on Wednesday, with Sweithelm knocking down a pair while Baker and Owen each had one.

As a team IUP shot a five-over 293 to drop back to 10th place overall. The Crimson Hawks were in a tie for sixth place after the first round with a 290 and now sit 17 strokes off the lead as Chico State owns a 10-under 566. Central Oklahoma dropped back to second with a seven-under 569 while CSU-Stanislaus jumped up to third with a three-under 573.

Nova Southeastern is fourth with a one-under 575 while Barry and Georgia State are tied for fifth at one-over 577 and Western Washington follows in seventh with a two-over 578. St. Edward's and South Carolina-Aiken are just ahead of IUP at four-over 580 while the Crimson Hawks have shot a 583 in the first two rounds.

IUP is set to tee off in the third round at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, as the Crimson Hawks need to be in the top eight overall to advance to the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds on Friday.
