Senior swimmer Alex Plimpton was named an IUP Athlete of the Week in an announcement made Monday for the week ending on Sunday, Feb. 21
Plimpton broke the school record in the men’s 1000-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 9:25.85 Thursday on the first day of events at the PSAC Championships. The senior broke the two-year old record of 9:27.20 by more than a second, and came in third overall in the event.
Plimpton added a second-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, coming in with a time of 15:58.44. The senior also added top-seven finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively.
The IUP men finished the championships in third place, placing in the top three teams for the third-straight year. Last year, the IUP men finished second overall.
Next up for the Crimson Hawks are the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships, which are in Indianapolis March 9-12. Qualifiers will be announced by the NCAA soon and details will be available on IUPathletics.com.
