Senior basketball player Leslie Stapleton has been named an IUP Athlete of the Week in an announcement made Monday for the week ending on Sunday, March 6.
Stapleton, an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West division first team player, scored a career-high 33 points Saturday in IUP’s 77-62 win over West Chester in the PSAC tournament semifinals. The win advanced the Crimson Hawks to their first PSAC tournament championship game since 2009.
Against West Chester, Stapleton did most of her damage in the second half, scoring 23 points in the third and fourth quarters. For the game, she made six-of-11 3-pointers and made nine-of-10 shots from the foul line, including going six-of-six in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice.
On the year, Stapleton is scoring a team-high 16 points and shooting 44.9 percent from the field. Her 93.3 free throw percentage is second in Division II, while her 216 3-pointers are the most in program history.
