Freshman softball player Lauren Zola has been named an IUP Athlete of the Week in an announcement Monday for the week ending Sunday, April 10.
Zola is an Athlete of the Week for the first time as the Crimson Hawks softball team went 4-2 on the week with doubleheader sweeps of Edinboro and Pitt-Johnstown. IUP, now 19-13, has already equaled its 2015 win total.
Zola went 2-1 in three complete-game starts, allowing just three combined runs for a 0.66 ERA. The freshman fanned 25 batters over 21.1 innings, including a five-inning, nine strikeout shutout Tuesday against Edinboro.
With an 8-6 season record, Zola is second on the team in wins, strikeouts, complete games, shutouts and innings pitched. Zola has not lost back-to-back starts since early March, and is 4-2 in her last six starts.
