Freshman pole vaulter D.J. Horton has been named an IUP Athlete of the Week in an announcement made Monday for the week ending Sunday, April 24.

Horton continued his strong campaign after an impressive indoor season for the Crimson Hawks track and field team. His vault of 16-08.75 feet (5.10 meters) won the SRU Open and broke the 23-year-old outdoor record of 16-08.25, set by Doug Johnson in 1993.

Horton’s jump is the best on the season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and seventh in all of Division II. Named the PSAC Men’s Indoor Freshman of the Year, Horton jumped 16-02 (4.93 meters) to win the PSAC indoor championship.
