Freshman goalie Madeline Smakulski has been named an IUP Athlete of the Week, which was announced by the sports information office on Monday, October 16.
Smakulski earns her second consecutive IUP weekly honor and is coming off her finest performance of the season, shutting out No. 2-ranked Kutztown in the Crimson Hawks' 1-0 win over the Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon. The true freshman tied her season-high with seven saves, and led an IUP defensive effort that turned away 22 total shots. It was the first loss of the season for Kutztown, which entered the match with a 13-0 overall record while averaging 3.48 goals per game.
It was the sixth straight shutout for Smakulski, who improved her conference-leading goals against average to .281 and her save percentage to .933, which also leads the league and is one of the best marks in Division II.
