Junior pole vaulter DJ Horton has been named an IUP Athlete of the Week, which was announced by the sports information office on Monday, Jan. 29.
Horton himself next to a familiar phrase this weekend: IUP record breaker. The three-time All-American broke his own indoor pole vault record at the SPIRE Midwest Open in Geneva, Ohio, clearing 5.03 meters (16-5) to earn first place honors. It was also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and the fifth best height in Division II this season.
His previous record was 5.00 meters (16-4.75) which was set last February. He has now broken the school indoor record three times in his career.
Horton opened the weekend with a fourth place finish at the Penn State National Open Friday night, clearing 5.95 meters while competing against the best vaulters in Division I.
This is the ninth IUP weekly award of Horton’s career, the tied with Lenny Williams (football) for the most by a current IUP athlete.
