Junior guard Carolyn Appleby and junior pole vaulter DJ Horton have been named the IUP Athletes of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the sports information office.
 
Appleby averaged 20.0 points and 5.0 assists during the NCAA Division II Elite Eight as she helped the Crimson Hawks to the national semifinals a week ago. She was the only IUP player named to the Elite Eight All-Tournament Team.
 
The point guard scored 23 points in IUP's 75-71 quarterfinal win over No. 11 Stonehill, shooting 9-of-19 from the floor with six assists and four rebounds. Appleby added 17 points and four assists in the 92-68 loss to No. 1 Ashland in the semifinals.
 
She was also named the Most Outstanding Player from the Atlantic Region Tournament the week prior.
 
Horton opened the outdoor track & field season is strong form last weekend by hitting an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark at California's (Pa.) Early Bird Invitational. Horton won the event by clearing 5.19 meters, just 0.01 meters shy of his own IUP outdoor record.
 
His early season mark is the second best mark in Division II so far.
