Senior men's basketball guard
Dante Lombardi and freshman sprinter
Andre Carr were named the IUP Athletes of the Week, announced Monday morning by the IUP Sports Information Office.
This is Lombardi's second IUP weekly award of the season and fourth of his career and the first honor for Carr.
Lombardi scored a career-high 27 points to help lead the third-ranked Crimson Hawks to a comeback 88-77 top 25 victory over No. 11 Shippensburg Saturday night at the Memorial Field House.
Lombardi hit five 3-pointers on the night, including three in the first half to match Shippensburg's hot shooting from beyond the arc. He also finished 8-of-10 from the free throw line and fought through foul trouble in the second half to score 13 points in the final 20 minutes.
He iced the game at a crucial point, getting a steal and fast break layup to extend the Crimson Hawks' lead to 84-75 with 31 seconds left to play.
The win kept IUP undefeated at 9-0 and 3-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Carr had a successful collegiate debut with the Crimson Hawks, hitting an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the 60 meters at the YSU Icebreaker. He qualified for the finals with a time of 6.89 seconds before finishing third overall with a mark of 6.84.
It's the fastest time in the Atlantic Region and eighth fastest in Division II this indoor season. It was also just a few ticks away from the IUP record of 6.80 set by
Julius Rivera during the 2015-16 season.
Carr also posted a PSAC qualifying mark of 22.10 in the 200 meters, which was good for eighth at the meet and is the second fastest time in the conference this year.
