Senior men's pole vaulter
DJ Horton and senior sprinter
Christian Jones were named the IUP Athletes of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the IUP Sports Information Office.
This is the first IUP weekly award of the season for both Horton and Jones.
Competing in his first meet of the year for the IUP Men's Track and Field team, Horton cleared 5.10 meters in the pole vault to finish second overall on the first day of the Penn State National Open, held on Friday afternoon in University Park, Pa.
After finishing fourth at the Penn State National Open in 2018, Horton improved upon that finish at this year's event, clearing the 5.10 meter barrier on his first attempt. That height was also good enough to earned Horton an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark as well.
After being named the PSAC Indoor Field Athlete of the week following his exploits at the YSU Icebreaker Meet in December, Jones returned to action on Saturday at the Al Hall Freedom Games held in Edinboro, Pa. Jones earned a first place finish in the men's high jump at the meet, setting a new season and career record after clearing 2.11 meters. That height also earned Jones an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark.
Jones' jump is the best mark in the PSAC, and is the sixth best in Division II so far this season.
