Sophomore soccer forward
Mahogany Willis and Freshman field hockey forward
Blaise Cugini were named the IUP Athletes of the Week, announced by the IUP Sports Information Office Teusday afternoon.
This is the third IUP weekly award for Willis and the first career award for Cugini.
Willis scored four goals and added one assist for a total of nine points in the Crimson Hawks lone match of last week. Willis's four goals helped the Crimson Hawks to open their season with a dominant 5-0 victory over Glenville State College on Saturday afternoon.
Willis's phenomenal effort against Glenville State College put her name into the IUP women's soccer record books. Her four goals in a single game tied the program record for goals in a game, matching the efforts of Erin Falce against Penn State Altoona in 2004, and Sarah Romasco against Clarion in 2006. She also set a new school record for the most points in a single game, with her nine-point tally surpassing the 20 year-old school record of eight set by Jessica Dominguez in 1999 against Salem-Teikyo.
She currently leads the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in scoring with nine points, and is tied for the PSAC lead for goals scored (4). Willis finished last year ranked third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with 14 goals and 29 points. The 14 goals are tied for the ninth most in IUP single season history and are the second most by an IUP freshman.
Her performance last weekend was recognized by the conference on Monday as she was named PSAC Western Division Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career.
