Junior guard
Courtney Alexander and senior jumper
Nickeela Austin were named IUP Athletes of the Week, announced Monday morning by the IUP sports information office.
This is the first career IUP weekly honor for Alexander and the fourth for Austin, including the first this year.
Alexander had a career day as she helped the 13th-ranked IUP women's basketball team to a 71-38 win at Mansfield Saturday afternoon. In her second start of the season, she posted career-highs of 18 points and six 3-pointers in 33 minutes. She added five rebounds and three assists.
The six treys are a season-high by an IUP player and the most since
Megan Smith hit six in a game at Seton Hill February 24, 2018.
Alexander helped IUP total nine 3-pointers as a team, the most since making 14 in the season-opener.
Austin had a successful indoor season-opener for the IUP women's track & field program as she hit NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks in a pair of events at Youngstown State's YSU Icebreaker.
Austin leapt 5.76 meters in the long jump and posted a mark of 11.79 meters in the triple jump, both good for third overall in the respective events. Her triple jump distance was an indoor personal best while her mark in the long jump was just 0.01 meters shy of tying her PR set at last winter's PSAC championships.
