Sophomore sprinter
Dre Carr and senior guard
Malik Miller were named the IUP Athletes of the Week, announced Monday morning by the sports information office.
This is Carr's third career IUP weekly honor, including the first this year. It's the second straight for Miller and the fourth of his career.
Carr returned from winter break in fantastic fashion as he broke the IUP men's indoor 60 meter record with a time of 6.71 seconds Saturday at Edinboro's Al Hall Freedom Games.
The time was good enough to automatically qualify him for the NCAA Division II Championships next month in Birmingham, Alabama and is the third best mark in the division this indoor season. He took home first place in the event, giving him nine career (indoor and outdoor) event victories.
Miller had another standout week on the hardwood as he led the seventh-ranked IUP men's basketball team to wins over Pitt-Johnstown and Clarion, averaging 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. He shot 48.3 percent from the field, 87.5 percent from the foul line and made seven 3-pointers.
Miller scored 22 points in Wednesday's 100-93 road win at UPJ, a battle between the top two teams in the PSAC West, adding six rebounds, six assists and two blocks. It was his third straight 22-point performance. He followed with a career-high 27 points in an 82-71 win over an upset-minded Clarion team, going 12-of-13 from the foul line.
