Originally named the Memorial Field House Swimming and Diving Complex when it was opened, Pidgeon Natatorium is not only one of the most intimate teaching and training centers for competitive swimming in Pennsylvania, but in all of Division II.
Located in the western wing of the Memorial Field House, the facility features a full-size, six lane swimming pool, as well as an adjacent warmup pool. A raised grandstand provides ample seating for fans, while offices and locker rooms at pool level provide easy access for coaches and swimmers. The Memorial Field House auxillary gym and training rooms are also available for athletes throughout the season.
On February 6, 2010, the complex was dedicated and renamed the John A. Pidgeon Natatorium, after former IUP volunteer swimming coach John (Jack) Pidgeon.
A native of Massachusetts, Pidgeon was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a graduate of Bowdoin College. He held honorary doctoral degrees from Bethany College and Washington and Jefferson College.
Pidgeon retired from the headmaster position at the prestigious Kiski School in 2002 after 45 years of service. In addition to his work as headmaster at Kiski, he also taught English and coached several sports teams and numerous prep school All-American swimmers.
Pidgeon Natatorium Features:
