Dedicated on May 6, 2000, Owen J. Dougherty Field is not only one of the finest facilities on the campus of IUP, but also regarded as one of the best natural surfaced baseball venues in the entire Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Located on IUP’s south campus, Owen J. Dougherty Field sits adjacent to Ruth Podbielski Field (softball) and South Campus Field (soccer).

In 1992, IUP dedicated Owen J. Dougherty Field at the southern end of main campus, adjacent to George P. Miller Stadium (football), with the understanding that the name would move to the new South Campus complex once completed.

Owen Dougherty’s legacy at IUP has few parallels, as he served the university for 35 years. Head coach of baseball, football and a key administrator in diverse positions from 1956 until his passing in 1991, Dougherty was an inaugural inductee into the IUP Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

Today, Owen J. Dougherty Field features a state-of-the-art scoreboard in left field with dugouts and bullpens down the left and right field lines. Designed with a symmetrical outfield wall, the dimensions at Owen J. Dougherty field are: 330 feet to both foul poles, 380 feet to the left and right center field gaps and 400 feet to straight away center field.

Just outside the playing field sits dual batting cages enclosed by a framed fenced cage with updated inside netting, which provides practice for the IUP baseball team prior to games and at practices. Located behind home plate is an indoor press box equipped with a new, updated sound system in fall 2018, as well as equipment storage, public restrooms and concessions.

In the summer of 2020, IUP finished its new turf project at Dougherty Field. The project added an artificial turf infield and foul territory area that also features new IUP Athletics branding behind home plate. The project also included new turf home and away bullpens.
