Melissa Kornock (Hatfield/North Penn) scored a goal in her seventh straight game, converting a penalty kick with 27:27 remaining in the second half to give IUP a 1-0 victory over host Gannon in a PSAC contest Saturday night.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 8-3-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the PSAC West. With 19 points in conference play, IUP trails only West Chester (24) and California (21) with four PSAC games remaining. The top eight teams earn trips to the playoffs and the top four hosts opening round games.
IUP has won seven of its last eight games after starting the season 1-2-1, with the lone loss in that stretch being a 4-3 setback to conference-leading West Chester.
The Golden Knights (3-6-2, 2-6-1) held a 30-8 advantage in shots, but IUP goalie
Kelly Brennan (Middletown/Middletown) made 10 saves including one off a shot by Katie Urban in the final seconds to preserve the shutout.
The Crimson Hawk offense was thwarted by six offside calls. Sabrina Chirco made two saves for Gannon. Kornock increased her goal total to a team-leading 12 on the season and the game-winning goal was her third of the year.
IUP plays again Tuesday at Bloomsburg in a showdown between two teams battling for one of the top seeds in the PSAC playoffs.
