IUP's volleyball season came to an end Friday with a 3-0 loss to California in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament at McComb Fieldhouse in Edinboro.
The Crimson Hawks finished with a record of 21-11 following their 25-15, 25-21, 25-23 setback. IUP was making its first appearance in the postseason since earning seven consecutive bids from 2000-06.
Danielle Ostendorf (Rockford, IL/Boylan Catholic) led the IUP offense with 12 kills while also making three blocks, one fewer than team leader
Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy).
Emily Pany (Coplay, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) recorded 21 digs and
Laura McFadden (Orefield, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) added 14.
Chelsey Kreinbrook (Dawson, Pa./Geibel Catholic) contributed 19 assists.
Pany finished the year with 741 digs, the second-highest total in school history, and she posted four of the top six season marks ever at IUP. Her 2,670 digs over the past four seasons are almost 1,000 ahead of the next highest total in the Crimson Hawk record book. Pany began the week ranked third in the nation in digs at 6.61 per set.
Ostendorf, who along with Pany was named to the All-PSAC West team last week, increased her career kills total to 660 and ranks 10th in school history with one more season remaining.
After California won handily in the first set, the Crimson Hawks opened up leads in both of the final two sets before the Vulcans rallied. IUP built a 17-12 lead in the second set and was tied at 21 before California won four of the final five points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, IUP got consecutive kills from
Jessica Bodkin (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) to take a 22-17 lead. Another kills by Bodkin left the Crimson Hawks in front 23-21 before the Vulcans were able to win the final four points to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
