Eryn Withers (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) hit a buzzer beating 3-pointer to lift IUP to a 55-53 win over District of Columbia at IUP's Memorial Field House, avenging a loss in the season opener.
IUP (2-2) broke a 46-46 tie with 2:15 remaining when
Katelyn Marshall (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) made a layup and completed the old-school three-point play. Niqky Hughes then picked up three of her game-high 17 points to tie the game again.
With 1:05 on the clock Stacy Griffith hit pair of free throws to put UDC (4-3) back on top 51-49.
Lacey Claar (Imler, Pa./Claysburg-Kimmel) hit a 3-pointer to put the Crimson Hawks up by one. Lillian McGill hit a layup with five seconds on the clock to set the stage for Withers' game-winning 3.
After a Dohnay Banice layup at 11:37, UDC opened up the lead to six, but the Crimson Hawks answered with a 9-3 run getting five points from Withers including a 3 that tied the game with 4:50 on the clock at 44.
UDC used a 14-7 run to open up the largest lead of the game at seven points midway through the first half. Hughes and McGill combined for 12 of the 14 points on a run that spanned just over four minutes.
Withers turned in a team-high 15 points with all four of her field goals coming from beyond the arc. Her four 3-pointers give her 102 in her career placing her sixth all-time on the school record list. She also made five of IUP's 12 steals.
Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) led the Crimson Hawks with seven rebounds.
Lacey Claar (Imler, Pa./Claysburg-Kimmel) added 13 points and dropped five assists for the Crimson Hawks. Claar was 3 of 6 from 3-point range giving her 167 in her career, just three off the school record set by Katie Glaws.
McGill followed Hughes with 16 points and eight boards. Stacey Griffith also had eight rebounds for the Firebirds, who held a 41-26 advantage on the glass and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds.
The Crimson Hawks return to action next Saturday when they host Shippensburg in the Susan G. Komen Shoot for the Cure Classic at 3:00. The first game that day features California vs. West Liberty at 1:00. UDC returns to action Wednesday when they host Bowie State.
