Carter Sheely (Carlisle/Cumberland Valley) found the back of the net with less than two minutes to play to carry the Crimson Hawks past Kutztown 2-1 Saturday in PSAC women's soccer action.
Sheely's second goal of the season was unassisted and allowed IUP to win its fourth in a row, including three straight in conference play, following a 1-2-1 start. The Crimson Hawks are 5-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the PSAC while Kutztown dropped to 6-3 and 3-3.
The win also gave IUP a 1-0-1 record against teams picked to finish in the top four in preseason voting by the conference head coaches. The Crimson Hawks played California (No. 2) to a 0-0 draw earlier in the season and Kutztown finished fourth in the preseason poll.
West Chester was the choice to win the conference while IUP was picked third.
Melissa Kornock (Hatfield/North Penn) scored a goal in her third consecutive game at 33:30 when she found the ball in front on
Heather Robbins (Frederica, DE/Polytech)' cross. Kornock has scored a total of five goals in three games this week, including two vs. Wheeling Jesuit and Mansfield.
Kutztown answered the Kornock goal with a score by Julia DiFerdinando from Stephanie Borland at the 34:04 mark. It stayed tied at 1 until Sheely netted the game winner with 1:50 remaining in the game.
Kelly Brennan (Middletown/Middletown) made six saves for IUP and picked up the win. Alyssa Hackleberg was credited with three saves for the Golden Bears.
The Crimson Hawks will take on Millersville Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the South Campus Soccer Field in another PSAC contest.
