Boxscore

IUP shut down the East Stroudsburg offense to set a school record for fewest points allowed in an 86-18 victory over the Warriors in a PSAC crossover game Saturday at Memorial Field House.

The Crimson Hawks won their fifth in a row and improved to 7-4 with a defensive effort that eclipsed the previous low total of 21 points allowed to Alderson-Broaddus in 1999 and Salem International in 2008. The previous record for fewest points allowed to a PSAC opponent came in a 63-29 win over Lock Haven in 2009.

The 68-point margin of victory was the third-largest in school history and the highest against a PSAC opponent, topping the previous mark set in a 104-51 win over Cheyney in 1995. The win was the seventh in a row for the Crimson Hawks over East Stroudsburg and improved IUP's record in crossover games to 28-4 over the past six years.

It was also head coach Jeff Dow's 50th win against only 20 losses in three seasons at IUP.

Eryn Withers (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) led five IUP players in double figures with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. She was followed by Katelyn Marshall (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and Vianca Tejada (Pennsauken, NJ/Cherry Hill East) with 12 and Lacey Claar (Imler, Pa./Claysburg-Kimmel) and Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) with 10. Marshall also had four of IUP's 15 steals while Claar dished out five assists.

Claar moved within 16 points of becoming the 19th player in school history to reach the 1,000 mark. Withers increased her career 3-point total to 120 and moved past Kara Taylor for fourth place in that category. Claar holds the record with 186.

Arika Ullman (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) drained three 3-pointers and scored a season-high nine points while Gieringer also set a season best in scoring with seven points.

IUP limited East Stroudsburg (3-8) to 20.5 percent shooting from the field, including 0 for 15 from 3-point distance, forced 36 turnovers which the Crimson Hawks turned into 41 points and held a 49-30 rebounding advantage with Brianna Johnson (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) leading the way with 10 followed by Chelsea Gieringer (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) with eight.

The Crimson Hawks raced to an 11-0 lead and kept the Warriors off the scoreboard for nearly six minutes while forcing eight turnovers during that time. The margin steadily grew throughout the opening 20 minutes and ended with IUP holding a 45-13 advantage, with Withers and Claar combining for 24 points in the period.

The second half was more of the same as IUP scored the first 13 points to build a 45-point lead. A basket by Mia Waring at the 15:15 mark proved to be the only two points scored by East Stroudsburg in the second half until just seven minutes remained in the game.

The five points scored by the Warriors in the second half is tied for the lowest total allowed in a half by IUP, matched only by Salem International in 2008.

The Crimson Hawks look to go undefeated in their four crossover games tomorrow when they host Kutztown in a 1 p.m. contest.
