SHIPPENSBURG, PA –
Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) totaled 14 kills and
Carissa Miara (Pittsburgh/West Allegheny) had 49 assists as IUP split on the first day of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) volleyball crossover, falling to Shippensburg in three sets before rallying to defeat East Stroudsburg in three on Friday afternoon.
In the sweep of ESU, the Crimson Hawks scored their points in chunks, getting at least three-in-a-row six times during the opening 25-14 win in game one.
IUP capitalized on the errors made by the Warriors, while also getting key points from Cerveny, Sova and
Danielle Ostendorf (Rockford, IL/Boylan Catholic).
In the second set it was all IUP, as the Crimson Hawks went up 5-3 before reeling off four straight points and 10 of 14 to take a commanding 15-7 lead. IUP then went on a huge 9-0 run, which included three straight aces from
Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College), and got a final kill from Cerveny to take the big 25-8 win.
The Crimson Hawks continued their monster run in the third set, getting off to a great start with an 8-0 run, getting a pair of kills from Hester.
After the Warriors scored three of four points, IUP responded by scoring nine of the next 14 to take an 18-8 lead. After ESU scored three-in-a-row and five of seven to narrow its deficit to 20-13, the Crimson Hawks finished off the set on a 5-1 run, including kills from Cerveny, Ostendorf and Miara to take the match with a 25-14 clinching win.
Sova finished with an efficient eight kills on 17 total attacks against ESU, with Cerveny also contributing with another eight kills on 19 attacks of her own. Ostendorf and Hester each added six kills, while Miara had three and 27 assists. Defensively,
Emily Vaughn (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) had a game-high 18 digs with Hester getting 14. Hester also had four aces while
Stacey Root (York/Spring Grove) added three on her own.
In the day's opener, Cerveny and Ostendorf each recorded six kills with Miara getting 22 assists in the loss. Vaughn had 20 digs defensively for the Crimson Hawks against Shippensburg.
The Crimson Hawks (8-12, 2-7) will drive to Millersville tomorrow where they'll take the Marauders and Lock Haven tomorrow morning and afternoon.
