CHEYNEY, PA –
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the IUP women's basketball team rolled to an 83-25 victory over Cheyney in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks (2-0) started strong and never looked back, jumping out to a 15-0 lead before the Wolves got on the board.
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) had the hot hand early, nailing three three-pointers and a jumper for a quick 11 points.
Cheyney would fight back thanks to a pair of buckets from Brooke Garrett and Nadirah Brown, but IUP would lean on Stoner to expand their lead late in the first half. Stoner poured in 16 points in the first stanza and was 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) and
Lisa Burton (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills) each chipped in five first half points to give IUP a 43-19 lead at the break.
The Crimson hawks did not take their foot off the gas in the second half, however, ripping off a 28-2 run to begin the period.
Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) scored seven points for IUP, while
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and
Liz Kane (York/West York) both connected from three-point territory.
Linda Henderson would respond for Cheyney with a jumper and a three on consecutive trips down the floor, but a pair of three's from Fairman salted away the game for the Crimson Hawks.
Fairman finished with 11 points and six assists, and was 3-of-4 from three-point territory. Stapleton finished with 13 points and was 5-of-6 from the floor, while Pastorek finished with nine points and five rebounds. Burton added eight points for the Crimson Hawks, while
Vianca Tejada (Pennsauken, NJ/Cherry Hill East) had four points, five assists and seven boards.
Henderson scored six points to lead the Wolves, while Garrett, Lachelle Miller, and Aerie DeJesus added four points each.
The Crimson Hawks continue their weekend road trip tomorrow when they face Shippensburg at 1:00 p.m.
