Box Score

INDIANA, PA – Freshmen Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) each scored 15 points, leading a balanced Crimson Hawks offensive attack as five players reached double-figures in IUP's 91-46 home win over Washington Adventist in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Memorial Field House.

It got off to a slow start for the Crimson Hawks (4-0), falling behind 7-4 after a jumper by the Lady Shocks Vanessa Rice 4:47 into the first half. IUP came back, getting a layup by Vianca Tejada (Pennsauken, NJ/Cherry Hill East) followed by a pair of free throws by Mathe to take an 8-7 lead a minute later.

The Shocks followed that with a three-pointer to go on top by one before Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) came right back with a trey of her own, followed by a fast break layup off a steal by Mathe as the Crimson Hawks went on top 13-10 at the 12:35 mark.

Once again Washington Adventist narrowed its deficit to one at 13-12 with a jumper by Angelica Nevarez, before a three-pointer by Mathe on the next trip down the floor sparked a 22-3 run over the next 7:18 to take a commanding 35-15 with 4:45 remaining in the half.

Mathe scored the first eight points of the run as the Crimson Hawks scored 14 straight, following up the run by scoring seven more points as IUP took a 42-19 lead into the break.

The Crimson Hawks started off the second half where they left off in the first, scoring the first six points to go on top 48-19 before Mathe's third three of the game jump started another IUP run, this one 15-1 with Stapleton capping it with a layup, as the Crimson Hawks went on top 65-27 with less than 10 minutes to go.

It was smooth sailing from there on out for the Crimson Hawks, getting a layup and one by Stoner, three three-pointers by Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center), and clutch shooting at the line, to build up to the 45-point victory.

Rice led Washington Adventist with a game-high 25 points, connecting on 9-of-16 from the field, including 7-of-9 from three-point range. Nevarez was the only other Shock to reach double-figures, scoring 10 points in 37 minutes.

The Crimson Hawks forced 24 turnovers in the first half alone, as the Shocks gave it up a total of 38 times in 40 minutes. IUP outshot the Shocks 50.8 to 33.3 percent, also outrebounding Washington Adventist 38-33.

Stoner went 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line, grabbing six rebounds to go along with her 15 points in 16 minutes of action. Mathe's 15 came in 18 minutes, as she was perfect going 5-of-5 from the field, 3-of-3 from three-point range, and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.  She added three assists and five steals.

Tejada scored 14 points for the Crimson Hawks, going 7-of-9 from the floor with three steals in 19 minutes off the bench. Fairman went 3-of-6 from long range, scoring 11 points off the bench, while Lisa Burton (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills) added 10 points.

The Crimson Hawks remain at the Memorial Field House this weekend as they host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action on Saturday, playing Bloomsburg on Saturday and Mansfield on Sunday. Both games tip at 1:00 p.m.
