Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, posting her second double-double of the season, as the Crimson Hawks tough defense led IUP to a 57-31 win over Seton Hill on the first day of the Susan G. Komen “Shoot for the Cure” Classic at the Kovalchick Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The 9-0 start by the Crimson Hawks is their best since the 2007-08 season when they also began the year unblemished in their first nine games, as they won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crown and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
IUP got out to a 12-5 lead after a three-pointer by
Arika Ullman (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) at the 15:38 mark.
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) had a hot hand early, scoring the Crimson Hawks first six points and seven overall in the first 4:22.
The game then saw a run of scoreless streaks, as IUP didn't score until two minutes later to take a 14-5 lead, then after a free throw by Seton Hill's Tiara Stossel, an Indiana High School product, at 12:41, went two more minutes before scoring to take a 15-6 lead with 10:27 remaining in the half.
That was the start of seven straight points by the Crimson Hawks, five coming off the hand of Pastorek. A three-pointer by Seton Hill's Paige Alviani cut the Griffins deficit to 12 at 21-9 with 5:04 left before another layup by Pastorek and a three by
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) put IUP up by 17 at 26-9 less than four minutes later. IUP would again lead by 17 after two more by Pastorek with 29 seconds left before taking a 15-poitn lead into the break.
The Crimson Hawks extended their lead to 22 at the 17:39 mark of the second half after layups by Pastorek and Fairman and a three by
Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel). A layup by Alviani at the 16:00 minute mark made it a 37-17 IUP lead before the Crimson Hawks went on a 14-1 run over the next 8:27 to take complete control and put the game out of reach at 51-18 with 7:33 remaining. IUP would allow just 13 more points over the final seven-plus minutes of the game en route to the 26-point victory.
Alviani led Seton Hill with eight points, as the Griffins connected on just 12-of-61 (19.7 percent) from the field.
Stoner finished with 11 points in 18 minutes, going 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line. Pastorek went 6-of-11 from the field, grabbing four offensive boards and adding two steals and a block.
Melanie Todd (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) had a game-high 11 rebounds in just 21 minutes, five being on the offensive end.
In the opening game of the Komen Classic, Cal defeated Bowie State 83-62.
