Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate) had a game-high 20 points and
Kevin Jones (Washington, DC/Bishop O'Connell) added a career-high 17 points off the bench as IUP rebounded with a 65-49 win over Urbana in the final game of the Fourth Annual Indiana Regional Medical Center Classic at the Kovalchick Complex on Monday night.
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Crimson Hawks (8-2) built a seven-point lead thanks to layups by Jones and
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter). Dusan Komljenovic drilled a three to cut the lead the just four, but Smith would march to the line and sink a pair of freebies to put IUP on top 19-13 with 8:27 to play in the first half.
Just two minutes later, the Crimson Hawks would rip off six straight points thanks to a pair of jumpers from Wells and another impressive bucket in the post from Jones. IUP would expand their lead to 16 late in the half when Jones deposited another bucket, and Smith would cap off a terrific half with another layup to put the score at 36-18 heading into the break.
Dyrell Dolson came out sharp for Urbana in the second half, swooping in for a pair of layups to cut the lead to 14, but Smith would drill a three-ball to keep the Blue Knights at arms length. With under 14 minutes to play in the second half and the IUP lead at 18, Dolson put together a personal 5-0 run to put Urbana back into the game.
Ramel Mitchell and Komljenovic would both get layups as Urbana continued to cut into the IUP lead, but Jones would once again go to work in the post, depositing back-to-back layups to pull away from from the Blue Knights. Smith would later seal the victory for the Crimson Hawks with a layup and a pull-up jumper from the top of the key with under two minutes to play in the game.
Smith was 7-of-12 from the floor for his 20 points and added four rebounds, while Jones was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field for his 17 points.
Anthony Wells (Cleveland, OH/Shaker Heights) had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds for IUP, while Chance chipped in eight points, four boards and game-high six assists.
Dolson led the way for Urbana with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while Mitchell chipped in 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Komljenovic added eight points and four rebounds.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action in two weeks when they host West Chester at 7:30 p.m. on January 6.
