EAST STROUDSBURG, PA - The Crimson Hawks held on to a one-point lead with 1:21 remaining, forcing East Stroudsburg into two missed shots and a turnover, with
Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) scoring 10 points in the second half, as IUP came away with a 46-45 win over the Warriors in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's basketball crossover matchup on Friday evening at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Crimson Hawks (7-0, 5-0) held an eight-point lead with 10:06 left before ESU scored five straight points to cut its deficit to 41-38 four minutes later.
A pair of free throws by
Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) put the Crimson Hawks up by five, and would put another two through the net two minutes later as IUP took a 45-39 lead with 3:58 remaining.
The Warriors (3-4, 1-4) Jasmine Jones hit own two free throws and would get a jumper by Fayola Moise to cut its deficit to two with 2:40 remaining, before Watson knocked down another free throw to give the Crimson Hawks a 46-43 lead with 2:23 left in the game.
After a pair of turnovers, Moise would knock down a jumper with 1:21 remaining to cut the Crimson Hawks lead to 46-45 with 1:21 remaining. A turnover by IUP gave the Warriors the ball back 16 seconds later, but the Crimson Hawks came up big by forcing an ESU turnover right after to continue to hold onto the one-point lead.
A missed opportunity by IUP gave the ball back to the Warriors, but Pastorek blocked the go-ahead attempt by Ryann Fiascki with 14 seconds left, as ESU retained possession out of bounds. The Warriors would get another attempt at the lead, but Moise missed a jumper with eight seconds left as IUP grabbed the rebound, preserving its one-point lead in the game's final seconds.
Moise and Andrea Veres each scored 10 points for the Warriors, who outshot IUP 40.5 percent to 31.0 percent, but was forced into 30 turnovers by the Crimson Hawks.
Pastorek totaled a team-high 12 points, grabbing seven rebounds and adding four steals, three assists and two blocks. The Crimson Hawks snatched 14 offensive rebounds and had 17 total steals.
The Crimson Hawks travel an hour south tomorrow, facing Kutztown on Saturday.
